We All Scream...

When I first arrived in Alaska, the state was dealing with shutting down Matanuska Maid... a dairy company purchased by the state that ended up flopping due to poor management. It put dairy farmers in a bind and the future seemed bleak, until one farmer decided to put the peddle to the metal and open up a small dairy venture in the Valley. In just a few months, Matanuska Creamery evolved and saved the Mat-Su dairy cows from going to slaughter. The plant has gone from making cheese and bottling milk to now producing premium ice cream. And it is striving to use all local ingredients. We had the chance to sample three of its flavors -- vanilla, birch almond & cappuccino crunch. Right now, it's selling to ice cream shops and restaurants, but the goal is to offer the ice cream in pint sizes by next year. Look out, Ben & Jerry!
